Generative Home Goods

A collection of home goods developed using generative design techniques.

@vxl.studio

Role

Designed and prototyped plant pot

Found vendors and drove production of 100s of individual units

Sold pieces to stores and individuals

Team

Independent

Core Concept

An obsession with geometric patterns, and a recent interest in house plants.

A novel form, where the plant roots balance the external holder.

Design Process

Staying with the organic theme, I used a generative modeling process to explore the design space. This process is about trying new constraint configurations, finding what works, and going down those many uncertain paths.

Influencing The Outcomes

I developed a feel for how to guide it by creating differently shaped and spaced constraints

Variants

Some of the many, many rejects. This is a process of saying ‘not quite’.

Production

Four painting methods and three vendors later, I found the right combination of application and material: a three coat spray paint with a custom jig to hold each pot.

Paths, 5”

Core Conept

It started from an obsession with geometric patterns, and a recent interest in house plants.

While exploring the combination of these two ideas, I discovered an approach that highlighted both the inner plant and external form.

To preserve the focus on the form, the finish needed to be a perfect layer of satin.
